Patricia – Proofreader

Meet Zombiekiller Patricia from “Reviewland”, Madrid! 🙂

1) What is your name and where do you work?
My name is Patricia López Iglesias, and I work for Synthesis Iberia.

2) How and when did you enter the game localization industry?
My first job in the industry was at Synthesis! I’ve been working here for almost seven years now.

3) What is your primary job at Synthesis?
I work as a reviewer/proofreader, and I take care of small translations too.

4) What do you have to take care of today?
Today I have to review 10.000 words for several projects like Skylanders, Call of Duty and Dishonored.

5) What is your “Synthesis nickname” and what is the story behind?
I don’t have a nickname, but we call our department “Revisonia” (something like Reviewland).

6) What is the funniest localization flaw you stumbled upon at your time at Synthesis?
We were once allowed to use made up names for the characters in a videogame for small children. The final result was that almost all the office was present in the game: Hugo, Bea, myself…

7) What was your most demanding project and what made it so special?
My most important game has always been COD. In the shooters, it’s very important to play extra attention to follow the action: you must know how many characters there are in a particular scene, the relationship they have, etc. Also, the war terminology is quite vast, and it’s easy to get lost sometimes.

8) What is your favourite game and why?
I couldn’t choose, but I’d say I love every game where I’m allowed to kill zombies!

9) What do you love about videogames localization?
I really love this job. It’s very amusing and it’s almost impossible to get bored while working. The huge variety of tasks and genres make my job really entertaining.

10) What do you hate about videogames localization?
Above all, the lack of context. Sometimes we must struggle to know what’s happening in a particular scene. Under these circumstances, it’s very difficult to provide a correct translation.

11) Final question: what do you do when you’re not sitting in front of your computer?
Oh, I kill zombies!! And I practice Kung Fu 🙂
