Harry – Managing Director of Synthesis Pacific-Asia

Meet Harry from Synthesis Pacific/Asia!

1) What is your name and where do you work?
My name is Harry Inaba and I oversee Synthesis’ activities in the Asian Pacific region.

2) How and when did you enter the game localization industry?
I joined Konami right after I graduated from university. I was first assigned to International Business Department which had nothing to do with game development but was relocated to work on game development after 3 years because I was so desperate!

3) What is your primary job at Synthesis?
My main role is business development in SE Asian region right now. I meet new partners in the regions so we can offer more comprehensive solutions for so called exotic languages in Asian territory.

4) What do you have to take care of today?
Working on some quotes and dealing with our marketing strategy for Asia.

5) What is the funniest localization flaw you stumbled upon at your time at Synthesis?
To be totally honest, any flaw I stumbled upon was never funny. Or I can say nothing done by us was funny I believe.

6) What was your most demanding project and what made it so special?
It was long time ago but localizing STAR WARS GALAXY to Japanese was a challenge. The volume was huge at that time and it was STAR WARS you know. We had so many books related to STAR WARS as a reference but it was so fun to work. We had a blast working on that title.

7) What is your favourite game and why?
Metal Gear Solid which was my last project when I worked at Konami.

8) What do you love about videogames localization?
Working on a strong franchise such as STAR WARS, MARVEL or any Disney property is always challenging but also awesome. I really like working on licensed games.

9) What do you hate about videogames localization?
Hmm… UI Strings maybe. It is just like translating many many words with not much room for creativity…

10) Final question: what do you do when you’re not sitting in front of your computer?
I enjoy reading books, swimming, playing pool, watching movies, walking my lovely dog and spending my time with my family.
